Richard Lee Ford, Jr., age 85, passed away on August 6, 2014. He was born on March 6, 1929, and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, graduating from Maury High School in 1947. An Eagle Scout in Norfolk Troop 15, Dick was also a member of the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech and graduated in Architectural Engineering, Class of 1951. Dick was a Korean War veteran, serving as a First Lieutenant in the 339th Engineer Battalion. As a Professional Engineer, he worked at Fort Norfolk for many years with the Army Corps of Engineers and then completed his career with TRADOC at Fort Monroe. After retirement, Dick lived in Radford and was a member of Pulaski Memorial Baptist Church for many years and most recently was a resident at Sanders Assisted Living in Gloucester. He was a long-time member of the Hokie Club and a die-hard Virginia Tech fan.
Preceded in death by his parents, Richard L. Ford, Sr., and Lucy Bond Ford, and his brother, James Lawrence Ford.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Dollie Wright Ford, son and wife, Richard L. Ford, III, and Sarah George, and grandson Stuart W. Ford (all Salt Lake City), daughter Susan M. Ford and close friend Jeanette Canady (Gloucester), and in-laws Louise W. Stafford, George and Shirley Wright, Gay Wright, Alberta Wright, Sylvia Wright, Bette Wright, and Kathleen Wright.
Services will be held at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 11 a.m. Reverend Thomas Bunting will officiate.
In Dick's memory contributions will be greatly appreciated to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. G. Edward Mowry, 7274 Joseph Lewis Road, Hayes, Virginia 23072.
