On March 5, 2014 our mother, age 87, passed on to a better and pain free world. Rheva Gray Stilley Reed was born May 21, 1926 in Crittenden, Virginia, to the late Floyd Edward Gray and Carrie May Johnson Gray.
She graduated from Chuckatuck High School in 1943 and went on to Buxton Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1946 as a Registered Nurse. The same year she married the love of her life, Kenneth Bryan Stilley, at Ebenezer Methodist Church in Crittenden. Two children were born of this union, Wirt Weston Stilley, II and Cynthia Gray Stilley. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Newport News until coming home to Crittenden in the early 1950's.
Rheva was an active nurse helping others while working in several hospitals and doing private duty along with other endeavors within her community. The Crittenden, Eclipse and Hobson Home Demonstration Club awarded her the first Woman of the Year Award for 1950-60 for her selfless devotion to her community. Throughout her life, working with the pain and discomfort arthritis, she cared for others any way she could. Finally in 1978 having been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis she retired from the Newborn Nursery at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. During her retirement she still managed to get friends to doctor's appointments, the pharmacy, grocery store, church and the Senior Center in Crittenden where she was an active member for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Bryan Stilley and sister, Mildred Gray Beale.
She is survived by her sister, Arlene Matthews of Crittenden; children, Wirt Weston Stilley, II (Zealon) of Gloucester Point, VA and Cynthia Gray Stilley-Newman (Richard) of Round Hill, VA; grandchildren, Kenneth Bryan Stilley, II (Shari), Richard King Newman, IV and Kenneth Hager Newman; and great-grandchildren, Wirt Weston Stilley, III and Caroline Paige Stilley; and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service officiated by Reverend Carl LeMon will be held 1 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be private.
The family would like to thank the staff at York Convalescent Center for the loving care they provided our mother, and Barbara Williams, Nurse Practitioner, who also became a friend.
In our mother's memory contributions may be given to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1589 Steeple Drive, Suffolk, VA 23433.
