James William "Billie" Cooke departed this earthly life on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in the peace of his residence and company of his beloved wife of 64 years, Janie Goodman Cooke.
James "Billie" Cooke was born on April 2, 1921, the son of the late Sarah Frances and Robert Lee Cooke in Gloucester, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his siblings Herman Cooke and DeSylvia Cooke Jones.
James "Billie" Cooke completed his high school education at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA. He furthered his academic studies majoring in Business at North Carolina A&T (Agricultural Institute) University and graduated from Virginia State (Institute) University. James served his country as a member of the armed forces in the United States Army for a number of years in various assignments. Upon completion of his military service, James "Billie" Cooke established a career as manager with the Norfolk Department of Redevelopment and Housing and retired from this position.
James "Billie" Cooke married Janie Goodman Cooke on July 10, 1948. They both worshipped faithfully at Grace Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Virginia for many years. James was a former member of the Chesterfield Social Club. James was a passionate fisherman and well known for sharing his "past time bounty" among family and friends.
He is cherished in the memories of his surviving loved ones, his devoted wife Janie Goodman Cooke; his niece Patricia Cooke and Michelle Jennings; his nephews Herman W. Cook, Jr., and Robert Lee Cook (Celestine); and a host of caring relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service, officiated by Reverend Joseph N. Green, Jr. will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Inurnment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden.
